Alcoholism: How the Bible Can Help Speed Up Recovery

Share

In the Bible, drinking alcohol and spirits is not condemned. In fact, there are many accounts in the Scriptures that mention drinking as a form of merry-making. However, the Bible condemns man for its compulsive desire to drink without end, in other words, meaning to get drunk.

Alcoholism is a common problem in society. While some people drink alcohol as a way to be merry, others drink alcohol to escape their current bitter realities. Unfortunately, drinking too much alcohol can encourage negative personality traits to dominate while a person is under its influence. It also leads to dependence of alcohol which can cause harm in the areas of health, family relationships, and work performance. In the end, a person who suffers from alcoholism ends up enslaved by its sins.

There is hope for people who suffer from alcoholism. God is able to deliver you completely by cleansing, sanctifying and justifying you. Alcoholism is linked to the failing of the flesh but the Holy Spirit can, and will,  produce the self-control you need to overcome it (Galatians 5:22-23) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Overcoming alcoholism can be a challenge. It requires you to cleanse not only your body, but also your mind. As mentioned earlier, some people drink alcohol in order to escape their current situation.  It is important for anyone who wants to recover to acknowledge the problem, and ask God for guidance and strength to overcome it. If you are paying too much attention to your sins and you are honoring it, you will not be able to solve the problem.  Hebrews 12:2(NIV) fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  This passage invites you to honor God to absolve you from your afflictions that are causing you to drink compulsively in the first place. The text in Hebrew says “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

Also, worrying too much can lead people to drink. Matthew 6:34 (NIV) Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  This advises us to take one day at a time.  For those who drink to forget their worries, remember that God is with you all the time, and, with him, you will be able to find peace in your heart and mind. Lastly, remember that our body is the temple of Christ and alcoholism is one of the ways of desecrating it.
