RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

Recently, I went to see the movie “Unbroken” directed by Angelina Jolie-Pitt version about the extraordinary life of Louis Zamperini.   The film left out the most important chapter on how Zamperini met Christ.  The film shares a story of an American hero whose life has been transformed, in part, by people around him who encouraged him to never quit and press forward.   Though the movie was well written and seemed intended to encourage all of us to never give up during hard times, it fell short in one area in particular. Zamperini was not only a heroic war veteran and a US Olympic winner, but also a champion of faith.

After the war, Zamperini came home and suffered from severe post-traumatic stress that led him to experience night terrors.  He later got involved with pornography, nicotine, alcohol abuse that caused marital problems.  It was during this time of difficulty in 1949 that his wife heard about Dr. Graham’s crusade, and decided to give Christ a chance to turn things around.  The words she heard that night changed her life, and she shared them with her husband, Louis Zamperini.  She invited him to one of Graham’s services, and he too received Christ.  As a result, Zamperini’s marriage was revived and their lives were never the same again.  Zamperini remembered that the military chaplain had given him a bible and he began reading the word daily. Zamperini began trusting in God and his life and marriage began to heal.

Through Christ, Zamperini was able to forgive his enemies who had tortured him when he was a prisoner of war.   The interview footage of Zamperini in his own words has been released by the Billy Graham Association, Louis Zamperini: Captured by Grace.  Zamperini was an inspirational speaker, and spoke several times at Billy Graham’s crusades. In 2014, at age 97, Zamperini had lived a full life and went home to be with the Lord.

We all go through struggles sometimes in life.  One thing Zamperini has clearly demonstrated is that he tried to battle his fears alone, and it nearly destroyed his life, his marriage and future destiny.  If you are struggling today, and feel like tomorrow is not going to get better, we at Brookhaven Hospital are here to help.  Don’t delay, call us today.  We have faith that you will overcome and make 2015 a victory year, similar to the one Zamperini experienced in 1949.
