RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

RENEWAL: Christian Treatment and Recovery is an optional treatment supplement available through Brookhaven Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At Brookhaven, we understand that when you are suffering from an eating disorder, a personality disorder, a behavioral health disorder or chemical dependency, life can seem utterly hopeless. Break the Cycle of Bulimia with Faith

Share

bulimia and faithEating disorders can take a heavy toll on your physical and mental health. But many Christians who have suffered with eating disorders like bulimia also feel a strain on their relationship with God. It’s natural for anyone afflicted with a disorder to ask “why me?” Questioning faith in troubled times is only natural. But make no mistake about it: your disorder is not a punishment from God. The Bible is full of examples of God healing the broken-hearted and binding their wounds; however the Bible also calls for personal accountability.

In other words, successful bulimia treatment requires admitting that you need help. Once you put yourself on the path to recovery, you can then draw on your relationship with God as a source of strength. Rather than seeing God as a tormentor, look on Him as Father and a friend.

Here are a few things to remember when seeking bulimia treatment:

God Has a Plan

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)

If you are suffering with bulimia you might see your symptoms as being at odds with a Christian life. Bulimia can therefore be a source of shame and cause you to feel forsaken. Our difficulties can get the best of us all at times. But that does not mean that God doesn’t have a plan for you. Job, Jeremiah and Jesus all experienced hardship. You’re in good company.

You are Not Alone

“…Serve one another humbly in love.” (Galatians 5:13 NIV)

When struggling with bulimia, know that you aren’t alone. Bulimia affects 1 in every 10 women. Though the disorder is more prevalent in women, men are not immune. In a Christian eating disorder program, you can share the road with others who are enduring similar hardships. By entering a program, you not only have the ability to receive help from other Christians, you have the ability to be a Good Samaritan and offer your hand to others in need.

Persevere

“Be strong and courageous … for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Don’t give up. Bulimia can be effectively managed so that you are free of symptoms. Often the best course of action is to enter a program that will integrate your spirituality into your treatment. In this way, you can involve God in your road to recovery. Treatment requires perseverance. However, take comfort in the fact that God will be at your side each step of the way. Through your faith, you can break the cycle of bulimia and experience a new life.
