RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

RENEWAL: Christian Treatment and Recovery is an optional treatment supplement available through Brookhaven Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At Brookhaven, we understand that when you are suffering from an eating disorder, a personality disorder, a behavioral health disorder or chemical dependency, life can seem utterly hopeless. It can cause Christians to feel abandoned and distant from God. However, by strengthening your spirituality, in conjunction with our professional medical services, you can experience results that you never thought were possible.

RENEWAL is based on the belief in:

God who created us and loves us (Genesis 1:26)
Jesus Christ who redeems us (Isaiah 53:5)
The Holy Spirit who guides us (Acts 1:8)

When you participate in RENEWAL, you’re part of something much bigger than yourself. Brookhaven clients receive expert care from our team of mental professionals. Treatment is solution-focused and success-oriented. Our goal is to minimize symptoms, help individuals address life problems and live fulfilling lives. Sometimes healing requires a helping hand. How Cults Evangelize

Synopsis
Are you aware that most cults are composed of individuals without major psychiatric disorders who are experiencing an unusual level of stress when they encounter cults? Individuals with psychological issues are not necessarily attached to cults because of their mental health stability needs, but they are more vulnerable to the cults control tactics. Cults use adaptations of the “brainwashing” techniques used by the Chinese during the Korean War. Come learn about the power of influence.

Preventing Pastoral Burnout

Synopsis
Ministerial burnout can be caused by a number of contributing factors including stress, time management, family conflicts, congregational politics, management of thoughts & emotions, and a lack of recreational activities. Rather than trying to identify one root cause of burnout we will take a systematic approach and discuss how the problems related to stress & burnout are networked together. Only by understanding the multifaceted nature of ministerial burnout can one fully begin to formulate an effective plan for prevention.

How to Minister about Sexual Issues

Synopsis
Talking about sex is not easy for most of us! Yet, it is helpful to remember that God created sex. It is His wonderful and mysterious creation. My goal is to help couples be able to talk with each other about this most important area of marriage, and experience freedom and congruence within their faith. Couples can enhance sexual intimacy through dialogue and negotiation and thereby strengthen their marriages. During his presentation, Jim Grinell presented area ministers with powerful resources on “How to Minister about Sexual Issues.”

The Dimensions of Addiction

Effective treatment programs typically incorporate several components, each directed to a particular aspect of the illness and its consequences. During her presentation Martha G. Brewer, LPC, discussed the intricacies of drug addiction and how to tailor treatment to an individual’s unique needs.

The Role of Forgiveness In the Therapeutic Process

Synopsis
Forgiveness is not just a religious practice but a valid form of mind body therapy that is an integral part of healing and prevention. A recent article in the January issue of Harvard Women’s Health Watch outlines how forgiveness can positively affect a person’s health leading to reduced stress, improved heart function, enriched relationships, reduced levels of pain and anxiety, and increased life satisfaction. Christians are given a biblical mandate to forgive and very often hurting people look to the church for a more meaningful understanding of forgiveness. It is fundamental then that believers be able to communicate the practice of forgiveness to emotionally wounded people. During his presentation, Chris Giles, MS, LMFT, will help attendees explore the significance, progression and role of forgiveness in the therapeutic process.

Counseling for the Millennial Generation

Synopsis
Often times adolescents desire to share their problems with an adult but don’t for fear of being misunderstood or shamed, hence the common place complaint, “Grownups just don’t understand.” It should be established then that identifying the unique issues, social pressures and cultural influences of today’s youth is vital to fostering meaningful and influential connection. During his presentation, Jonathan Hines, Director of Hines Family Counseling, shared his insight into the special dynamics of the millennial generation, the “do’s and don’ts” of youth counseling and how to initiate relevant communication.

Justice or Forgiveness

Synopsis
When offences occur people have two choices: to forgive or to exact some form of personal justice. However, when one chooses to forgive the means to do so often eludes them. The reality is that forgiveness can be a rather complex process, even when one has an abundance of good-will to do so. During her presentation Dr. Karen Simmons talked about some practical steps towards producing real forgiveness.

Emotional Needs and Our Emotional Relational Problems

Synopsis
Proper respect and attention to the emotional needs of an individual is essential to proper psychological health; although, as human nature would have it, people often think of emotional needs in terms of “my needs,” an awareness of one’s own requirements being paramount. During his presentation, Dane Tyner discussed his understanding of human emotional needs and the relationships between these and our emotional and relational problems. Additionally, issues of both emotional injury and malnutrition were addressed and quantified through an “Emotional Need Matrix,” which graphically aided participant’s understanding of these issues. The seminar was a resounding success as indicated by the overwhelmingly positive feedback and large turn out.

Pastoral Burnout: Compassion, Fatigue and On the Job Stress

Synopsis
Some Ministers may assume that extreme stress and fatigue are naturally a part of the role of serving in a community of faith; this, however, can lead to a dismissal of the harmful effects of stressors in ministry resulting in pastoral burnout. Available statistics reflect this reality; according to one study, 1,700 Pastors left the ministry each month in 2007, which is not surprising as 90% of Pastors reported working between 55 and 75 hours per week; it is of vital importance for Ministers to be aware of these realities. This workshop educated attendees on the effects of stress and compassion fatigue and focused heavily on self-care, offering a variety of practical steps and exercises to prevent pastoral burnout.

Pregnancy Loss: Post Abortion Trauma and Unresolved Grief

Synopsis
By the age of 45, one out of every three women in the US has had an abortion. Of those who have experienced abortion, up to 70% report that they are morally opposed to abortion. Many are people of faith. Some clients have or have had a loved one affected by this type of pregnancy loss. The stress is amplified when clients are unable to speak openly with family, friends, loved ones and medical/ mental health providers about this intense loss and their grief. During her workshop, Mary reviewed the impact of pregnancy loss through abortion and introduced Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats, a post abortion healing program for women and men who are suffering from the pain of abortion.
