Christian’s Dealing with Histrionic Personality Disorder

Share

If you are living with any type of Personality Disorder, including Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) you know that it can be hard to live what people would say is a “normal” life.  But you can live a normal life and be able to go on about life with special help, support and understanding.  Understanding what HPD is, how it may affect you along with how to deal with it will make all the difference when it comes to moving on.

Histrionic Personality Disorder is when a person’s overall psychological state is characterized as “excessively emotional”.  They will need to constantly feel approval from other people. They may also engage in sexual behavior that is inappropriate in their struggle to find intimacy with others, feel good about themselves and feel wanted or important.  This particular behavior may be towards children or adults and is usually a way to try and get attention and recognition. Their sexual behavior towards others may not reflect good judgment or clear thinking.  Those who have studied this particular disorder believe there are many different reasons why someone may develop HPD.   Making sure you understanding how you it affects you and your behavior can help you know how to work through issues.

It is important to look for help if you been diagnosed with Histrionic Personality Disorder or are experiencing some of the symptoms.  Finding Christian help is the first step in dealing with this particular issue and trying to work through the problem. Doing what the therapist and physicians recommend is important, along with meeting with them regularly.  There is nothing wrong with getting some help when you need it.  Psalm 119:93 says, “I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life.” (NIV)

Also, having an accountability partner is important; they are to help make sure you stay on track.   This person can pray with and for you along with as well.  You also need to do praying on your own as well.  Luke 22:44 says, “And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” (NIV)

Also make sure you keep yourself out of situations that may cause you to act in a way which you could regret or in ways which can hurt other people.  If there are people who cause you to get overly emotional or lure you into trouble stay away from these people and areas.  If you know what your triggers are, you are able to make watch out for the kinds of situations which trigger your emotional volatility and out-of-control behaviors.

Living with HPD is not always easy, but with your focus and the right support system and following God’s direction, it is possible to live a life without having to deal with a disorder lurking over your shoulder.  Being willing to put effort into changing your behavior will make all the difference along with making sure you have the right group of people around to support you and making sure you take the necessary time to be with the Lord.
