Christian’s Winning Against Substance Abuse

Are you finding yourself or someone you love in trouble with the police?  Is a pastor or church member praying that you stop using drugs or alcohol?  Do people run away from you, because you are always high or drunk?  Is there physical violence in your environment because of misuse of substance?

Substance abuse is described as the over indulgence of a chemical substance and the resulting dependence on that substance that interfere with life’s activities. There are alarming increases in the abuse of mind and mood altering substances such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and misuse of prescription drugs. The mental and physical health of the individual is affected by substance abuse which also significantly affects the lives of others around them.

If you have a drug or alcohol problem the bible says “…In the end it bites like a poison or snakes, it stings like a viper.” (Proverbs 23:32) while drinking might seem fun at start in the end it will lead to destruction of your body, soul, and spirit.

Drug abuse is illegal and there are many damaging effects which can occur. God’s people should not abuse drugs. Some people favor the legalization of marijuana.  But even if it is legalized, Christian should not let it control their lives.  Romans 13:1-5 God ordained governing authorities to obey the law, to resist them is to resist God’s ordinance. In 1st Peter 2:13, 14 submit to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake.

The drug categories commonly abused include: stimulants, hallucinogens, depressants, opiods (narcotics), cocaine, alcohol and other substances alter the mind. People seek drugs once they are addicted and long for faster, better and long relief.  Drug abuse causes an altered mental state or intoxication which creates diminished control over the physical and mental powers. All drugs alter the user’s state of mind to cause intoxication. Intoxication is a high “euphoric” false sense of well being with a similar change in brain function. In proverbs 31:5 it states “for it they drink, they may forget the law.”

Habitual alcohol drinkers suffer the effect of the normal brain functions. The bible is filled with instructions on avoiding drunkenness. Examples can be found in Galatians 5:19-21 and in Revelation 9:20-21 and 18:23- tells us about the mind altering experience that will lead to destruction and punishment for those who will not repent.

The bible clearly rebukes intoxication. “Cast off the works of darkness, walk properly, not in drunkenness, make no provision to fulfill the lust of the flesh. Hence, whether caused by alcohol or by other drugs, intoxication violates God’s word.”

Drug abuse is a lack of sobriety and self control.  God condemns intoxication because this is a serious temptation. We are to control our bodies and resist evil and desires in our minds. Mind altering drugs weaken the mind’s ability to think clearly, to distinguish right from wrong and to exercise will power. This is true of all drugs.

According to scientific studies, many individuals with personality problems and chronic use of substances will experience poor memory, loss of will power and diminished motivation. Some drugs like LSD, heroin, cocaine, and other dangerous drugs create additional risks for the user.

The bible forbid us to participate in taking prohibited drugs Peter 1:13-17 states “Be sober, gird up the loins of your mind so you can avoid lust and be obedient and holy.”  This requires being alert.

Most of us know the problem and what the Bible says about substance abuse. Some people ask can I stop using and be free? Yes, you can stop using and live a life God wants you to have. But how do we stop? You need to have faith filled believers in your corner that care about you.  Next, you need to have a plan that works to get you out of bondage from substance abuse and addiction and into freedom.  If you are using drugs or alcohol or know someone that needs help with stopping don’t wait click here to get help now.
