RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

Jesus’ Teachings on Anger

AngryGuyBPD.jpgWritten by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for RENEWAL at Brookhaven Hospital

Jesus understood anger. Jesus was criticized, bullied, and mistreated. He taught us how to deal with our anger, especially when we have relationship conflicts.

In Matthew, Jesus tells us, “anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar, and, there, remember that your brother has something against you; leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. Settle matters quickly with your adversary.”

Jesus expects us to get rid of the anger quickly and not allow anger to take root in our hearts.  We need to ask ourselves, why we are angry. In marital relationships, some have difficulty saying to their spouse, “I am Sorry.” Sometimes we get entrenched in our point of view, and find it impossible to be the first person to apologize.

We must remember that Christ forgave us for all our faults and short comings. If the Lord can forgive you, then it should not be that hard for us to forgive someone else.[ Colossians 3:13]

Anger affects our lives, workplace, families and those closest to us. Anger can be very destructive.  There are tons of scriptures in the Bible that talk about anger and how we can prevent anger. Proverbs 14 V 29 says, “He who is slow to anger has great understanding.  But He who is quick-tempered exalts folly.”

Not everyone is able to control their anger. When someone speaks to you with anger, Proverbs tells us that “a gentle answer turns away wrath.”  That is a hard thing to do when you have a spouse who seems to be constantly angry.

Colossians 3V8 says, “But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander and abusive speech from your mouth.”  Here the scripture is talking about verbal abuse.

Humility is the greatest cure for anger, not pride!
