RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

RENEWAL: Christian Treatment and Recovery is an optional treatment supplement available through Brookhaven Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At Brookhaven, we understand that when you are suffering from an eating disorder, a personality disorder, a behavioral health disorder or chemical dependency, life can seem utterly hopeless. It can cause Christians to feel abandoned and distant from God. However, by strengthening your spirituality, in conjunction with our professional medical services, you can experience results that you never thought were possible.

RENEWAL is based on the belief in:

God who created us and loves us (Genesis 1:26)
Jesus Christ who redeems us (Isaiah 53:5)
The Holy Spirit who guides us (Acts 1:8)

Love: The Most Powerful Emotion

Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for RENEWAL at Brookhaven Hospital

God is the designer and creator of love. It is an emotion that is in all of us. Whether we choose to express love or not, love is still in us.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a story of tragic romance. A tale that is still loved by many in theater stage performances. It is a story that reflects the potentially tragic side of falling in love.

Romantic love is one of the most addictive substances on earth says,  Helen Fischer, an anthropologist who specializes in gender differences and the evolution of human emotions. Fischer further says “humans crave love, even to the point that we would die for it.”

Fischer’s research found that the “sting of being rejected by someone you love” is also rooted in the brain. It is one of the reasons that people will kill for love.

Yale researchers found that romantic love causes wanting and craving, and triggers the same pleasure centers in the brain as cocaine. (Brain and Behavior, Yale 2014)

“When we truly, selflessly wish for the well-being of others, we’re not getting that same rush of excitement that comes with, say, a tweet from our romantic love interest, because it’s not about us at all,” said Judson Brewer, adjunct professor of psychiatry at Yale now at the University of Massachusetts.

Fishcer  says that “Romantic love is an obsession, it possesses you.” Love continues to be a mystery, as it can be the greatest joy, and, yet, at the same time, it can be a painful experience.

Love is a fascinating subject. In the Gospel Book of John, Apostle John speaks about God’s kind of love. God romances us with His love and to show how much he loves us, sent His son to die for us- to make all our wrongs right again.  The human kind of love has been so misunderstood. When we marry, the saying goes “until death do us part.” The love between couples expresses that kind of love. No matter what you go through in your marriage, your love for one another should sustain you till the end.
