RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

Neurosurgeon Sees “Heavenly” Realm During Coma

One outspoken scientist and skeptic has spent his life studying the mechanics of the brain and ignoring patient stories about having heavenly visions or experiences, but has changed his tune after his own encounter with a seemingly divine experience during a near-death event.

That scientist is Dr. Eben Alexander, and he has been an academic neurosurgeon at Harvard University. In 2008, he found himself with a nearly fatal case of bacterial meningitis. Eventually he entered a coma, with no brain activity for seven days.

To everyone at the hospital in Virginia, Alexander was unresponsive and unconscious, however, he says during that period he was on a “hyper-vivid and completely coherent odyssey” complete with butterflies and beautiful music. In this experience, he was accompanied by a beautiful, blue-eyed woman.

This experience has Alexander reconsidering the spiritual realm, going as far as to call his upcoming book “Proof of Heaven”. The doctor considered himself Christian before the coma, but had never had the faith to believe in an eternal afterlife. Now he is using his experience as scientific reasoning to believe in a consciousness after death.

The doctor has been a man of science for most of his life, including most of his time at Harvard Medical School where he taught, but his life was completely changed when he woke up at 4:30 a.m. on November 10, 2008. Suddenly, Alexander was hit with a severe pain in his back, and was paralyzed within minutes. The last thing he said before losing consciousness was “Don’t call 911.”

As any caring spouse would, his wife disregarded those words and rushed him to the hospital where he would lay comatose for his entire journey. While he experienced a magical journey, his family prepared for the worse. Suddenly, on day seven, he opened his eyes.

“While the neurons of my cortex were stunned to complete inactivity by the bacteria that had attacked them, my brain-free consciousness journeyed to another, larger dimension of the universe: a dimension I’d never dreamed existed and which the old, pre-coma me would have been more than happy to explain was a simple impossibility,” said Alexander.

His experience lead him towards God. “At the very heart of my journey [is this], that we are loved and accepted unconditionally by a God even more grand and unfathomably glorious than the one I’d learned.”

He is only now speaking out about what he saw during his time comatose, but his story is vivid and lends credence to the belief in the afterlife. For video of Alexander describing his experience, visit Leslie Larson’s article from the Daily Mail.
