RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

Spiritual Care for Divorce

Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for RENEWAL at Brookhaven Hospital

Moses had lots to say about divorce. Moses as judge of Israel, granted divorces only in certain areas. He did not grant divorce simply because a couple couldn’t work it out.  Even Jesus talked about divorce. Jesus speaking to his disciples on the subject said in the Gospel Book of Mark 10v 11, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her (V12) verses the same goes for a woman who divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”  Divorce destroys the plan God has for the family unit, and the family unit is very important to God.

In Hebrews 9:15, God lays out the plan of a marriage covenant that He has for his people. When that covenant is broken, it cannot be restored unless both the wife and husband ask God for forgiveness and healing. God is more than capable of healing marriages, as it was never God’s intent for divorce to be part of the human experience.

Does divorce happen among those in the faith in comparison to non-believers? Sadly, yes. The Christian Post reported “…while a higher proportion of born again Christians marry (84 percent) compared to the national average (78 percent), recent trends indicate that Americans are growing more comfortable with divorce.” Barna Group reports that “Among all born again Christians, which includes evangelicals, the divorce figure is 32 percent, which is statistically identical to the 33 percent figure among non-born again adults” the research group noted.

The Bible is clear on the rites of passage to divorce. Incidents of infidelity or spousal abuse allow for divorce, but not in the case of irreconcilable differences.  In Malachi 2:16 says, “For I hate divorce, says the Lord, the God of Israel.”

There is help for those struggling in the separation process. Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church in Corpus Christi, began hosting a “Divorce Spiritual Care” program. It is now in  over 6,000 churches across the United States. This program has saved many marriages and helped those who are struggling getting their lives back together after a divorce has been decreed.

I have heard many people say that that after a divorce, many struggle financially, become homeless, or lose their jobs as well as deal with depression.

Brookhaven Hospital Renewal Christian Care program is here to serve you, to help you recognize symptoms of behaviors that may be need to be addressed by professional counseling.  Please call us today! We are here to help you and your family.
