RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

RENEWAL: Christian Treatment and Recovery is an optional treatment supplement available through Brookhaven Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At Brookhaven, we understand that when you are suffering from an eating disorder, a personality disorder, a behavioral health disorder or chemical dependency, life can seem utterly hopeless. It can cause Christians to feel abandoned and distant from God. However, by strengthening your spirituality, in conjunction with our professional medical services, you can experience results that you never thought were possible.

RENEWAL is based on the belief in:

God who created us and loves us (Genesis 1:26)
Jesus Christ who redeems us (Isaiah 53:5)
The Holy Spirit who guides us (Acts 1:8)

When you participate in RENEWAL, you’re part of something much bigger than yourself. Brookhaven clients receive expert care from our team of mental professionals. Treatment is solution-focused and success-oriented. Our goal is to minimize symptoms, help individuals address life problems and live fulfilling lives. Sometimes healing requires a helping hand. We’re here to provide the guidance and support you need to recover.

The Danger of Toxic Thoughts

God's Light

Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Chaplain and Outreach Chaplain for Renewal at Brookhaven Hospital

According to Dr. Carolyn Leaf,  author of  Switch on Your Brain 5- step Learning Process75% to 95% of the illnesses that plague us today are a direct result of our thought life.”

Dr Leaf further said, “Change in your thinking is essential to detox the brain.”

Dr Leaf gives examples by beginning to stop some of the things we say to oursevles on a daily basis like a broken record. Often these sayings contain the phrases “could have, would have, should have.”

Sometimes we even catch ourselves saying things that our parents have said to us growing up that were negative. Sometimes we even do things that our parents did that are harmful to us physically, such as, drugs or alcohol.

These negative  patterns must transition to positive habits, so that our brain cells receive new messages enabling us to  enjoy life to the fullest.

Another example Dr. Leaf gives us  is the “if only” statements.  Sometimes we don’t know it, but we tend to grieve about issues that are in the past tense. I remember my husband told me one day, “if only my dad had inspired us to be somebody.”  An “if only” statement or thought indicates that we are ruminating on something that is in the past, and therefore cannot be changed.  We can create change as we move forward in life by making the best of our situation.  Seeing the positive can actually re-wire our brain over time.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 says “ Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also you do it [paraphrase].

For the next couple of weeks, we are going to look at our thought patterns and how they can cause toxicity in our lives.  This toxicity can show up in physical illness, mental illness and negative family dynamics.

Brookhaven Hospital’s Renewal Christian Care program is here to serve you, and to help you recognize symptoms and behaviors that may be need to be addressed by professional counseling.  Our next Pastoral Seminar will be on  Thursday, October 8th, 2015.  Please contact Lydia D’Ross at 918.438.4257 to register to attend.   We look forward to seeing you there.
