RENEWAL is designed to offer hope and comfort to people suffering from mental health disorders or addiction disorders, and support to the people who love them. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the people we serve and the belief that through a faith-based program, life-changing results are possible.

The Fruit of Faithfulness

Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for Renewal at Brookhaven Hospital

There are nine defined fruits of the spirit that the Bible teaches us.  For the past several weeks we have been exploring each of these fruits, and how they apply to our daily life.

Today we will be touching on the Fruit of Faithfulness and what that means to us as Christians. (Galatians 5:22)

Faithfulness can be defined as one who believes, trusts in God’s promises, is trustworthy, reliable, dependable, tested and sure. Faithfulness involves adhering firmly and devotedly to a person, cause or idea and to be loyal, constant, stable, persistent and continuing.

Hallmark has a card that fits the mood of our time by saying, “I can’t promise you forever, but I can promise you today.” That’s about as deep a commitment as some are willing to make towards being faithful. It is sad, but true. Too often in our society today, it seems that people quit when things get too difficult, whether you are talking about a marriage, a job, or even faith in God.  Faithfulness is not only about being faithful to your spouse, your job or to God. It is about being obedient to the promises laid out in scripture and to apply them faithfully in every area of your life.

God is faithful to us, and He keeps His promises. Every time you pick up a Bible, remember that He said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Mathew 24:35)  Even when we feel like we have messed up, scripture tells us as we have sung in the hymn, “Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father. Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.”

How to be faithful:

  1. Be faithful with your part (Read Matthew 25:14-30)
  2. Realize faithfulness is more important than talent.
  3. Be diligent with what your hand finds to do (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
  4. Don’t wait for a position
  5. Stick to your assignment.
  6. Understand faithfulness is a progression
  7. Look for something that needs to be done… meet the need.
  8. Don’t seek positions without faithfulness.
  9. Don’t quit (Ecclesiastes 10:4)
  10. Finish what you start/fulfill your ministry (Acts 12:25)
  11. And don’t beat yourself up if you mess up

The way to stay faithful to God is to remember what 1 Samuel 12:24 says,  “Only fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.”
